My child is "W" sitting. How can a Pediatric Physiotherapist help?

Some children play in "W" sitting a lot or persistently. These children sit on the floor with their knees inwards and feet outwards. This can also lead to walking with knees inwards and feet turned inwards. Persistent "W" sitting can remold the bones so you get inward twisting of the thigh bone and inward or outward twisting of the tibial bone depending upon the position of the foot in sitting. This persistent sitting position also weakens the hip and trunk muscles. Hip inside muscles are strong with the outwards muscles being weak. Trunk rotation muscles are weak, as they don't get a chance to practice. Pediatric physiotherapy can help by looking at how your child sits, gets up to standing and walks and determine any atypical patterns as well as weakness in their movement patterns. We will perform an evaluation and then develop a home program for your child to practice through movement games - activities that a fun, stimulating and are targeted to strengthening the weaker muscles and improving their motor skills.
