Information from PACE Physio- Infant and Child Physiotherapy - Check out the latest research on toddlers with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Updated: Oct 23

I found an interesting article published in the Physical Therapy Journal (Yang et al., 2019), about toddlers, aged 30-36 months, with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) compared with typical toddlers. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is characterized by primary difficulties in social interaction and communication and the presence of repetitive and restrictive behaviours. However in studying these toddlers, they found in addition to the difficulties in language and behavioural skills, they also had difficulties with 1) their gross and fine motor skills, and 2) they spent a lot more of time moving around the room, turning their body around and not staying in the centre area to play. Pediatric physiotherapy can help you with these motor skills and helping the child engage in the center of the room in the play area with the other children. It is important that children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) be detected as early as possible, so they can receive the early intervention they require. Baby Navigator from Florida State University (https://babynavigator.com/16-early-signs-of-autism-by-16-months/#fb0=3) suggests that the early signs can be detected by 16 months of age. As studies are showing these children are having difficulty with their postural and motor skills, it is important that they be seen by pediatric physiotherapy. If you are in the Montreal area, contact me at janethale@pacephysio.com or via my website at www.pacephysio.com. You can also contact Agir Tot at your local CLSC to receive a team approach including speech and language, occupational therapy, physiotherapy and special education to meet your child's needs. Remember Early Intervention is important to help your child learn while their brain and body systems are developing. #autism spectrum disorder; #motorskills; #physiotherapy; kidsphysio; #PediPT; #kidspt; #pediatrician, #autism, #babynavigator
